Asbestos Removal Process with DACT

Our asbestos removalist service follows a four-step process, starting with a consultation and ending with your home free from harmful materials.

    1. Free consultation and quote – After getting in touch with DACT Contractors, we can have an initial chat about your home and where you think the asbestos is located. Based on our conversation, we can offer you a quote and set up a date to come to your property and assess the situation.

    1. Asbestos survey – This stage involves our team of experts performing a thorough check of your premises to ensure there’s no hidden asbestos. Our inspection involves checking for airborne fibres and we will take samples where necessary to be tested. After testing, if we’ve found the samples to contain asbestos, we can commence with the removal of them from your property.

    1. Asbestos removal and disposal – After a full risk assessment of the area, we can keep the risk of exposure to a minimum and will proceed with the removal safely and responsibly. This includes sealing off the area and wetting it to limit the number of airborne samples. We can then safely dispose of the materials.

  1. Asbestos-free – Following a clean-down of the area, our job is completed and your property is free of asbestos, ensuring your family – or your tenants if you’re a landlord – are safe.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a name given to several naturally occurring mineral fibres. Asbestos fibres are known for their durability and resistance to heat, making them a popular choice throughout the 1900s for home insulation, concrete, car brakes, floor tiles and much more.

There are six different types of asbestos minerals, divided into two sub-groups: serpentine and amphiboles. The different types of asbestos minerals are:

  • Actinolite – Used in cement, insulation and paint.
  • Amosite – Used in insulation, tiles and gaskets.
  • Anthophyllite – Used in cement and insulation materials.
  • Chrysotile – One of the most common types of asbestos for building materials such as insulation and fireproofing products.
  • Crocidolite – Used for tiles, cement, and insulation materials.
  • Tremolite – Known to be used for paint, sealants and plumbing materials.

What does Asbestos look like?

Asbestos is made up of microscopic fibres and looks like a soft, fluffy material – each type featuring a different colour.

The asbestos shape varies by mineral type. While most types of asbestos have sharp fibres, chrysotile has long, curly fibres. Some types of asbestos can look no different than objects without. For example, concrete containing asbestos may look similar to concrete without asbestos.

Some products are more distinctive, though. Insulation that contains asbestos could have a cotton feel, while fibreglass insulation looks and feels more like wool.

Dangers of Asbestos

Exposure to asbestos fibres poses a significant risk to a person’s health and is known to cause different types and levels of cancer.

Breathing in high doses of asbestos for long periods affects the lungs, which causes a disease called asbestosis. This leads to an enlarged heart and difficulty breathing. While asbestosis can take decades to develop, people living with this condition are at an increased risk of cancer.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified all forms of asbestos as being carcinogenic to humans. Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, which is a type of cancer that forms on the protective tissue covering the lungs or abdomen. It can also cause cancer of the lungs, voice box and ovary.
